Following a meeting in Seoul today between the Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, Yoon-Woo Lee, and the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, Samsung Electronics announced that it will collaborate with Microsoft on efficient energy usage in computers. The two companies are aimed at encouraging PC users to purchase more environmentally friendly PC systems. Samsung expects substantial energy savings when Microsoft’s flagship Windows 7 operating system and Samsung’s 40 nanometer (nm) class DDR3 DRAM are used together.

Samsung, a strong supporter of Windows 7, will be migrating all of its corporate PCs worldwide to the new operating system beginning in 2010. The Green IT collaboration effort between the world’s number one memory company and the world’s number one software company is expected to contribute to the revival of IT markets that have been depressed from the economic downturn.

At the beginning of September, Samsung initiated its own global marketing campaign centered around “Less Energy, More Speed”, initially focused on its energy-efficient, 40nm-class, 2Gb DDR3 DRAM. Also, Microsoft has announced significant reductions in power consumption with the new power management function in its recently released Windows 7 operating system.

“Windows 7 was designed as a more environmentally-sound and energy-efficient OS, particularly evident in its managing of memory and when shifting into lower power mode,” said Kim James Woo, Country Manager of Microsoft Korea. He added that “users will enjoy the benefits when Windows 7 and DDR3 are combined.”

“There is no doubt that the combination of Windows 7 and 40nm DDR3 in new PCs will make users very happy,” said Dong-Soo Jun, executive senior vice president of memory marketing at Samsung Electronics. He added, “If you opt for 4GB of memory in a Windows 7-based system, over typical 2GB-based systems used today, you’ll see an increase in performance, while using less power, thanks to the efficiency of Samsung’s 40nm DD3 DRAM.”

In the ensuing months, while measuring the effects of this and other collaborative Green IT efforts, Samsung will continue to examine the potential for other areas of global cooperation with Microsoft in IT technology development.

Today Verizon Wireless launched its first Windows Mobile 6.5 powered smartphone, the multimedia-centric Imagio from HTC. As if being among the first Windows Mobile 6.5 devices to hit the market, the Imagio is also the first Verizon smartphone to include support for the MediaFLO(INFO) based V CAST Mobile TV service that Verizon offers for $15 per month. The digital TV service comes through to the Imagio via its antenna, which serves double duty as a viewing kickstand.

The TV should appear big and bold on the Imagio’s massive 3.6-inch touchscreen display, which sports a monstrous 800 x 480 pixel resolution. And since there are TV programs and channels from over 19 networks to choose from, there’s sure to be something for everybody to enjoy. Of course, if you prefer to do it yourself, there’s also a 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera with camcorder ability on the Imagio.

The HTC Imagio can do more than just keep you connected in the U.S. since it also offers quad-band GSM/EDGE and 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA support for world roaming capability when it can’t rely on Verizon’s speedy EV-DO Rev. A 3G network. WiFi connectivity is also available, and the large 1500mAh battery should give the device plenty of power.

Verizon claims that the HTC Imagio also provides users with seamless social network integration and an HTC TouchFLO 3D powered user interface. The Imagio supports V CAST Music with Rhapsody, too, and even offers a 3.5mm port for use with standard stereo headphones – no adapter required.

The HTC Imagio will be available online on October 6, 2009 for $199.99 with a 2-year agreement, after a $100 mail-in rebate that comes in the form of a debit card. The Imagio will be available in Verizon Wireless retail locations starting on October 20.

LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announced the imminent launch of three new Windows phones in the next few weeks, delivering on LG’s commitment to further grow its share of the global smartphone market. The three devices will kick off LG’s most aggressive smartphone strategy to date, which will ultimately result in a total of 13 new LG-branded Windows phones launched globally before the end of 2010.

The three latest additions to LG’s expanding smartphone line-up and the first to include the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system include a full touchscreen device, a touch slider with QWERTY keyboard and a QWERTY bar-type handset. The three phones will be aimed at different segments of the market ranging from premium to affordable smartphones. The phones will be introduced initially for early adopter customers in Europe, the United States and Asia before being made available globally.

Designed with usability in mind, LG’s latest smartphone offerings will highlight the touch-friendly, easy-to-navigate interface of Windows Mobile 6.5 which delivers an easier and faster smartphone experience for users. These Windows phones will be supported by LG’s own distinctive S-Class User Interface, which offers a unique 3D experience that works with Microsoft’s familiar operating system.

“This initial launch is a strong testament that LG is committed to offering a spectrum of choices for our broad range of customers,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our work with Microsoft on mobile devices reflects our strategy of offering the best in both hardware and software in all our smartphones.”

The latest version of Windows Mobile includes an upgraded Internet Explorer Mobile browser with a new engine and a customized version of Adobe Flash Lite for accessing sites previously unable to render properly on a handheld. Windows Mobile 6.5 will also include free access to Microsoft’s My Phone service where customers can perform automatic backups of photos, music, contacts and text messages from their handheld to the web for easy access any time.

“With familiar software like Microsoft Outlook, Windows Media Player and Windows Live, these phones will give people the confidence to get things done with the software they would normally expect from their PCs,” said Todd Peters, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Corp. “LG’s portfolio of stylish Windows smartphones gives people the ability to choose the model that best suits their style and budget.”

Launched in July, the LG Application Store will offer add-ons for all three devices as well as future LG smartphone devices. The site expects to offer up to 2,000 downloadable applications by the end of year.

The Swedish-Japanese company has also unveiled, in London, the Xperia Pureness, a handset that looks atypical for the Xperia family – that’s because it has something to do with Sony’s new make.believe brand direction.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness is a phone with a simple design, bringing together “beautiful craftsmanship and the concept of talk, text, time – a holiday from technology.”And to continue with the PR language, the Xperia Pureness “approaches the mobile phone as a work of art rather than technology.” Reportedly, Sony Ericsson’s designers “aimed to sculpt an object of design that reflected the purity of water and a sense of calmness when not in use.”

That said, Opera is already working on future improvements like Unite, an embedded web server that lets people share data easily, or faster Java performance, which comes in handy on Web 2.0 sites like Facebook. Opera 10 is free.

Nokia today introduced Nokia Money, a new mobile financial service offering consumers with mobile device access to basic financial services. For many consumers, this will be the first time they have had any access to such financial services.

Nokia Money has been designed to be as simple and convenient as making a voice call or sending an SMS. It will enable consumers to send money to another person just by using the person’s mobile phone number, as well as to pay merchants for goods and services, pay their utility bills, or recharge their prepaid SIM cards (SIM top-up). The services can be accessed 24 hours a day from anywhere, meaning savings in travel costs and time. Nokia is building a wide network of Nokia Money agents, where consumers can deposit money in or withdraw cash from their accounts.

4 billion mobile phones but only 1.6 billion bank accounts: “We believe mobile financial services offer a market opportunity with long term growth potential. In many countries, mobile phone ownership significantly exceeds bank account usage, suggesting that many mobile phone users have very limited or no access to basic financial services. With more than 4 billion mobile phone users and only 1.6 billion bank accounts, global demand for access to financial services presents a strong opportunity to combine mobile devices with simple but powerful financial services such as Nokia Money”, said Mary McDowell, EVP and Chief Development Officer, Nokia.

Mobile payments will be the next step for delivering financial services to hundreds of millions of people, both urban and rural, who are underserved by existing payment means, especially in emerging economies. “Rural consumers will particularly benefit from money transfers and, for urban consumers used to online services, we are enabling services such as payment of utility bills, purchase of train and movie tickets, top-ups, all through their mobile phones. Nokia Money is simple to use, secure and available across different operator networks and on virtually any mobile phone. This means millions of new consumers will soon be able to manage all their financial needs from their mobile phone”, said Teppo Paavola, VP and Head of Corporate Business Development, Nokia.

Building a new ecosystem for mobile payments: The Nokia Money service will be operated in cooperation with Obopay, a leader in developing global mobile payment solutions, which Nokia invested in earlier this year. The service is based on Obopay’s mobile payment platform, with unique and newly developed mobile elements. Nokia intends the service to be open and interoperable with other payment services as well.

“Obopay shares Nokia’s vision for bringing mobile financial services to millions of people worldwide. We’re excited that Nokia has chosen Obopay’s platform. Nokia’s leading market position, strong brand recognition and global distribution channel, using the Obopay platform with uniquely developed mobile elements, means the Nokia Money service is well positioned to bring the next generation of mobile payment services to the world,” said Carol Realini, Founder and CEO of Obopay.

Nokia Money is the result of a powerful collaboration Nokia is forging between different partners in different markets around the world. It is designed to work in partnership with mobile network operators and financial institutions, involving distributors and merchants in a dynamic ecosystem to seamlessly provide the new services.

“As a result of the innovative partnerships and comprehensive ecosystem we are forging with the banking and financial industry, as well as leading network operators, we believe Nokia Money will bring financial inclusion to many who currently have limited or no access to financial services. Uniting the strengths of the mobile and financial services industries will change the way people around the world can manage their money in the future”, added McDowell.

“Mobile financial services present a high growth sector for Nokia. Nokia’s asset strengths, including consumer brand awareness, distribution capabilities and global relationships should serve as logical and necessary extensions to drive innovation in the mobile payments and banking sector. To be successful Nokia must provide a legitimate bridge between operators, banks networks and security infrastructure in order to unlock the broad uptake of mobile financial services,” said Bob Egan, Global Head of Research and Chief Analyst, Towergroup.

The Nokia Money service will be shown for the first time at Nokia World on the 2nd and 3rd of September 2009 in Stuttgart, Germany, and it is planned to be rolled out gradually to selected markets, beginning in early 2010.

Motorola, has plans to come up with two Android Smartphones was there in news since a longtime and as they announced that they will launch these 2 smartphones powered by Google’s operating system before the end of the year. The company already launched a few programs aimed at helping developers build applications for the platform and seems to do more.

Moreover, some details on the user interface Motorola’s Android handsets are expected to be included in the news on Internet lately. According to BGR, the custom user interface Motorola plans for its Android phones should be called Blur and should sport a lot of features similar to those present with the webOS platform Palm has recently launched with its high-end Pre smartphone.

Motorola UI is heavily web-connected and that different areas of the OS and the interface will get updated over the air and is available in these phones. Other connectivity options are also expected to be available in the Android phones but complete details are yet to be revealed.

Motorola is really preparing something worthwhile for its users. Motorola’s Android powered handsets are expected to be mid-to-low-end, but the features they will pack inside might deliver about the same experience as high-end phones. Most amazingly, UI will bring together all personal contacts and social networking sites into a single view, making them easily accessible.
